Burgos: which mushroom permit you need for your forest

There is no single permit in Burgos: each plot has its own price and its own limit. A table of five plots, discounts, the north of the province and a pre-trip checklist.

If you are heading out for mushrooms in Burgos (on the map), you cannot buy one permit for the whole province. Here the permit is tied to a specific plot of forest, and prices and limits differ noticeably between neighbouring plots. Below we explain how to choose a forest, which permit you need for it, how much it costs and how much you can pick in a day. We have already covered the general rules of Castilla y León in our guide to Soria, and they are the same in Burgos. Here we cover only what makes Burgos different.

Why you choose the forest first and the permit second

There is no single permit for the province. Each regulated plot (in Spanish, acotado micológico) has its own prices and its own daily limit, and the differences between them are large. So the order is this: first choose your forest, then buy the permit for that particular plot.

How much a permit costs and how much you can pick

The table covers five plots where permits are sold online. The 2026 prices are given for a visitor on the standard rate and for a recreational permit, that is, if you are picking for yourself and not to sell. For all of them the season runs until 31 December 2026. Almost everywhere there is a separate limit for St George's mushroom (Calocybe gambosa, locally called perretxico) 12345.

Plot Day Two days Season Daily limit
Montes de Oca (BU-50015) €15 €25 €120 5 kg of all mushrooms combined, no more than 2 kg of St George's mushroom
Demanda – San Millán (BU-50017) €10 €15 €60 5 kg, no more than 2 kg of St George's mushroom
Fresneda de la Sierra Tirón (BU-50073) €10 €15 €60 5 kg, no more than 2 kg of St George's mushroom
Valle de Mena (BU-50019) €5 €7 €20 4 kg, no more than 2 kg of St George's mushroom
San Zadornil (BU-50003) €10 €15 €100 3 kg of mushrooms; the same permit also entitles you to 5 kg of chestnuts a day

For a single trip, Valle de Mena is the cheapest and Montes de Oca the most expensive. However, Montes de Oca, like Demanda – San Millán and Fresneda, has the highest daily limit. San Zadornil is the strictest on quantity: you can pick fewer mushrooms there than on any of the other four plots, even though the season permit is not cheap.

Cheaper for locals and “linked” pickers

The prices in the table are for visitors. If you are registered as resident in a settlement within the plot, you count as a local and pay €5 for the season on any of the five plots. There is also an intermediate option, the “linked” picker (vinculado): someone registered elsewhere who has a special connection with the plot's municipality. For them the season permit costs from €15 to €40 depending on the plot, and Fresneda has no such rate at all 12345.

What if you are picking to sell?

For that you need a commercial permit, and it is only available for the season. You can buy it in three places: in Demanda – San Millán and Fresneda it costs €250, and in Valle de Mena €100 for a visitor. With it you can pick up to 20 kg a day, of which up to 10 kg may be St George's mushroom. Montes de Oca and San Zadornil have no commercial permit 12345.

Everyone who goes out with a basket needs a permit

This is where groups often come unstuck: one permit per car is not enough, because everyone who picks needs one, including those who go along to help. Children under 14 can go without a permit, but they may only pick together with an adult who has one. The permit is personal and cannot be passed to someone else. The rangers may ask to see it along with your ID, so take the document into the forest with you. You can buy a permit on the micocyl.es website 1.

You do not need a permit in every forest around a village

The plot does not always cover all the forest around a village. The Micocyl map viewer shows which forests of the plot require a permit 1. The regulated zones of Castilla y León are also drawn on our map, but that layer is compiled from the register and may lag behind reality. If the map and the sign on the spot disagree, trust the sign.

The north of the province has its own permit

Everything written above does not apply to the north of the province. The plot “La Engaña – Merindades Norte”, around Espinosa de los Monteros and neighbouring municipalities, is not part of the general Micocyl system. It has its own website, micologiamerindadesnorte.es, and its own prices under a municipal ordinance of 2024 6.

For a visitor, a recreational permit costs €10 for a day, €15 for two days and €60 for a year. The annual permit is valid from the date of issue until 31 December of the same year. A permit bought in one municipality of the plot is also valid in the others. Some permits are sold online on the plot's website, and the rest at town halls and from the plot's partners 67.

The limit here is 4 kg a day, with no more than 2 kg of St George's mushroom 7. Children up to and including 14 years old pick without a permit if an adult with a permit is with them. The ordinance does not cover truffles. On days when hunting is permitted, picking is prohibited on those plots where hunting takes place 6.

The forecast tells you when to go, but does not allow you to pick

The Forecast map and the weekend forecast from MicoRadar show a model's calculation, not observations from the forest. The forecast does not override the rules of the plot: the permit, the limit and the sign on the spot take precedence over any calculation.

We do not say which mushrooms are edible and we do not give features for identifying them. For information on dangerous species, see the section on poisonous mushrooms. If you feel unwell after eating wild mushrooms, call 112.

Before you go

  • Choose a plot and check its prices and limit in the table above or on the plot's website.
  • Buy a permit for that plot for everyone who will be going out with a basket.
  • Check on the Micocyl map viewer which forests of the plot require a permit.
  • If you are going to the north of the province, buy a separate La Engaña permit and check whether there is hunting on the day you need.
  • Put your permit together with your ID.

What our model says is a forecast, not an observation. No mushroom can be safely identified from a photo or an app; if in any doubt, do not eat it. If anyone feels unwell after eating wild mushrooms, call 112.
